Introduction and Blog Critique

About Me:

Figure 1: My Partner and I

Hello, my name is Jarred Ooms, but I go by Red. My background in aviation and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) is relatively recent, stemming mainly from courses taken at Purdue. As a kid I was always very interested in aircraft from WWI-WWII, which progressed to an interest in Aerospace. This didn’t really stem into a possible career until high school when I went on aviation day trips with my physics classes. After the second aviation day trip I decided that I would apply to Purdue for Aerospace engineering, but I didn’t get accepted into that program. After that I began looking into other similar programs, which is where I found out about Purdue’s UAS program. After attending Purdue I began to have an interest in the more mechanical side of aviation, especially electronics, which led to my decision to pursue a second bachelors in Aeronautical Engineering Technology (AET). I am now in my third year at Purdue, and hope to graduate at a normal pace, but may stay a bit longer. Outside of school I have a decent variety of work experience for someone my age. I have worked in food service, emergency services, and a variety of blue collar work. From this variety of work I have learned skills that have aided me in my hands on schoolwork at Purdue. If you are interested in any more information about me, I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

Previous Blog Evaluation and Critique:

Introduction:

In the following bulleted paragraphs I will be Analyzing some E-portfolios from spring 2020. The following writing is not meant to be overly critical or negative, but is simply a critique on the structure of their E-portfolios, no offense is meant in my analysis. The name of the students blogs I chose are displayed, and a link to their blog is provided.

Critiques:

Ricky Vogel E-Portfolio Critique:

https://rvogeluas.blogspot.com/p/maps-tables-and-figures.html

Ricky’s blog is very well put together. The formatting is easy to follow and concise. Having a professionally done photo in the corner is a very nice touch. The tabs at the top of the page are to the point, but the backdrop photo does make it slightly hard to read them at a glance. I don’t know how he did it, but the custom emblem on the tab is a really nice touch. The left side panel is a little bland past the bio, but that may be due to the limitations of blogger more than Ricky’s work. For the Assessment page, and figures page, I’m not sure If I would prefer it to start with lab one, or with lab ten like he has it now, but I think that comes down to personal preference. All in all, a very excellent E-portfolio.

          Tristan Bungen E-Portfolio Critique:

https://tristanflies.blogspot.com/

I am not a big fan of the theme that Tristan used for his portfolio, being that the backdrop seems to large, while the home pages “featured” section seems almost too slim. The theme just seems clunky. The sidebar is pretty barren, which makes the balance of the page seem off. There is no readily available bio, which would make it hard for someone to get an idea of who he is. On top of this Tristan has not filled out his profile. The summary under the header at the top of the page seems a little out of place, and not very informative. The about me section at the top also leads to a page that does not actually have anything about Tristan. Profile picture is blurry, but is dressed up. In summary: Tristan’s blog is a little lacking, but he does have his class content on his page.

          Jesse Giampaolo E-Portfolio Critique:

          https://jessegiampaolouas.blogspot.com/

The theme Jesse chose is very pleasant and easy on the eyes, with the full page backdrop being a nice touch. Having color contrast on the text is a nice sublt touch, as it makes certain headers and topic pop to the reader. Her about me page has a good amount of info, and a lot of ways to contact her which is good. Her key figures page is blank which is a little odd, but this was during the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic. I wish there was a little more content to balance out the page, but that could just be my personal preference. To conclude: Jesse’s e-portfolio is visually impressive, but in my opinion could use more balance to the page.

          Kaleb Gould E-Portfolio Critique:

          https://www.blogger.com/profile/15173080641268350942

Not a fan of this theme, it is too dark and clunky, with odd choices in font size. The side bar on the page is pretty barren, which makes the page seem really empty. I like the inclusion of a certificates page tab at the top, but the actual certificate page is blank. Kaleb doesn’t have an about me or bio section, which may turn away someone looking to contact him. Also, when you link to his profile it is also empty, with a picture that does not clearly show who he is. The UAS platform is a nice touch, but should be fleshed out more, as anyone can make a list of UAVs. In my opinion he should have listed some operation, or media to back up his use of these platforms. To conclude: Kaleb's blog has some interesting additions that other blogs have been lacking, but nothing is flushed out which stops it from being impressive.

          Jordan Roberts E-Portfolio Critique:

          https://jordanrobertsuas.blogspot.com/

I like the Backdrop in of Jordan's blog, as well as the theme using a semitransparent display. His bio and contact info are good, but there is nothing on his blogger profile. I would like there to be some sort of profile picture, however, this is just personal preference.  His assessment page is old to new, which I prefer. Like Ricky he has a custom emblem on the web-page tab which is a nice touch. Something odd with the formatting is that after the backdrop image runs out the page itself is a blue color, which does not mesh well with the rest of the blog. To conclude: very solid blog, with some minor formatting issues.

Conclusion:

In summary, some of the blogs I critiqued had a lot more going for them in terms of content and visuals. I do not necessarily think that the blogs that were of lesser quality is due to a lack of effort from the creator of said blogs. When I have worked with blogger in the past I have noticed that sometimes, the software to make blogs through blogger just does not work right. For instance: On the sidebar of my current blog for this course, I used to have a more tabs displayed. However, for some reason the side panels would glitch into the center of the page, blocking content. I also noticed that some of the functionality of blogger seems to have been diminished, such as not being able to break text with an image on a page. Admittedly, some of the reviewed blogs were lacking in content because not a lot of effort went into them, but some of the fault goes to the software.
